Abstract

This study was carried out to clarify the expression and correlation of several economic characters of carrot in F©û hybrids and their parents. F©û hybrids showed strong hybrid vigor in quantitative characters such as leaf and root weight. The increase of root weight in F©û hybrids was more influenced by increase in root diameter than that of root length. But T/R ratio showed no statistically significant difference between parents and F©û hybrids in terms of increase of leaf and root weight. For the qualitative characters, F©û hybrids showed better root color but intermediate green shoulder compared with parents. Total sugar content was intermediate or lower than those of parents, making difficulties for breeding of superior F©û hybrids. By self pollination, we get uniformity but lose plant vigor, root weight and color that can be recovered by hybrid vigor in F©û. Ultimately it seems that hybrid breeding method was very useful to get the uniformity and superior characters in carrot breeding.
